Qualitative research in implementation science: engaging lived experience perspectives

Lived experience engagement plays a vital role in successful implementation research, particularly in achieving sustained adoption of health interventions. In this presentation Johnny Bourke will explore the various benefits of conducting genuine engagement and provide some practical tips for conducting lived experience engagement, in particular the selection and assessment of implementation strategies.
Dr Johnny Bourke is a Research Fellow at the John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research at The University of Sydney and a fellow of Sydney Health Partners. Johnny’s main research focus is understanding the complex factors involved in successful community reintegration following injury related disability. More specifically, Johnny’s focus is on co-designing implementation strategies and measuring implementation effectiveness within rehabilitation practice and policy. Johnny received the 2025 Laffan Prize to co-create new ways to promote increased social integration for people with SCI in NSW.
