Queer. China. Now—Chinese Queer Short Films

In today’s China, how do queer people live, love and dream? How do they relate to their families and the world around them? When expressing a queer identity becomes increasingly difficult, how do people continue to create queer lives?

These films journey through queer life in China at this very moment. Most of the selected films have never screened in Australia.

Across fiction, documentary and experimental film, the program explores family duty, marriage, migration, gender expression, performance and chosen family. Queer people return home, negotiate expectations, build intimate relationships and imagine alternative ways of living.

These films ask how queerness is lived through relationships: with parents, partners, friends, strangers and oneself. Intimate, surprising and often very funny, they reveal contemporary queer China as an ongoing negotiation between obligation and desire, visibility and concealment, belonging and freedom.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
