2025 Chinese Queer Lunar New Year Celebration

Shedding Skins, Reclaiming Wisdom”

In Chinese culture, snakes are often celebrated for their unique ability to shed their skin, representing renewal, healing, and self-acceptance.

🐍 Rebirth

When a snake sheds its skin, it lets go of the old and reveals something new, symbolising growth and transformation. For many queer Chinese diaspora, embracing our gender identity and sexuality is a similar process—breaking free from societal, familial, cultural, and even Western expectations to find and accept our authentic selves. This rebirth is a way of reclaiming our wisdom and redefining who we are.

🐍 Healing

In our traditions, snakes are often linked with wisdom and healing. Healing, for us, is not just about reconciling with the past but also about connecting with our community, finding strength in one another, and building a collective sense of belonging.

🐍 Self-Acceptance

In Chinese culture, snakes are sometimes called “little dragons.” They’re neither dragons nor ordinary creatures but exist as something wholly unique. Similarly, queer Chinese often navigate the tension between familial expectations, cultural identity, and personal expression. Through community, we find ways to heal and redefine ourselves. By embracing diversity and challenging binary thinking about gender, sexuality, and identity, we move beyond rigid definitions to create our own sense of belonging and value.

The spirit of the snakes teaches us an important lesson: “蒙兹灵蛇,断而能续” ---even when it falls apart, it can heal and continue to thrive. Transformation isn’t about abandoning the past; it’s about reshaping and reclaiming it. From struggle to reconciliation, from isolation to connection, from shame to pride—our journeys are stories of resilience and growth.
