This gathering is dedicated to fostering a warm, inclusive space where Queer Muslims and their allies can come together in community and reflection while breaking fast. We’ll be serving a diverse selection of authentic South East Asian cuisine, featuring flavours from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and a variety of both savoury and sweet options.
Venue details will be shared via email on Friday, March 21st at 11AM. To ensure a meaningful and memorable evening for everyone, we encourage you to register and RSVP early. Registration will close on March 20th at 11PM.
As Ramadan approaches, Muslims across the globe will begin a month devoted to fasting, self-reflection, and unity. From dawn to dusk, we will fast abstaining from food and drink, while prioritising kindness, generosity, and love. Ramadan is a time deeply rooted in spiritual and communal values, marked by a strong sense of community, shared meals, and deep contemplation.
For the second consecutive year, Queer Muslim Naarm, will be hosting Queer Iftars across Naarm/Melbourne, creating an inclusive space where individuals can come together in the spirit of Ramadan. Our Iftar gatherings are open to everyone, whether you identify as Muslim, culturally Muslim, Queer Muslim ally, or simply an individual who wants to partake in the tradition of breaking fast and celebrating community.
We charge a nominal fee to attendees to ensure their commitment to the event and catering arrangements. The profits generated from ticket sales will be allocated to various minor logistical expenses, including volunteer transportation costs, additional catering needs, and other related expenses. This approach allows us to provide a better experience for everyone involved while supporting our dedicated volunteers!
If you experience any issues with purchasing your ticket or if the cost is a barrier, please feel free to reach out to us at queermuslimnaarm@gmail.com, and we will be happy to assist you.
Queer Muslim Naarm is a vibrant collective that fosters a supportive and inclusive community for Queer Muslims and their allies. Through events like Queer Iftars, we creates space to celebrate diverse traditions, share stories, and build connections. The initiative combats isolation caused by intersecting identities and promotes belonging, open dialogue, and mutual support. By embracing and affirming each individual’s unique journey, it encourages a deeper understanding and appreciation of the community’s diverse experiences.
Queer Iftar gatherings are made possible with the generous support of Thorne Harbour Health, Switchboard Victoria, Mr Joe Ball - Victorian LGBTQIA+ Commissioner, Drummond Street Services, Transgender Victoria, Queen Victoria Women Centre, Darebin City Council and Yarra City Council. Their invaluable contributions help ensure these events remain inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to all who wish to participate.
**This event will be captured through photography and videography. If you wish your face to be blurred, kindly inform our organisers, on the day of the event. Please note that once the video and photo is uploaded, we won’t be able to make any edits.
Queer Muslim Naarm would like to acknowledge that this event, and all of the work that we undertake as a crew happens on stolen land. We wish to acknowledge the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation are the traditional custodians of this land. We pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal Land.
