Queer Social Footscray: Queer Graphic Memoirs with Khale

Graphic storytelling is a uniquely accessible tool that can make complex and difficult topics easy for the reader to understand. Many people find a comic much easier and more comfortable to engage with than an essay or novel.

Graphic storytelling can be a great way to tell our own stories - and our own nuanced Queer stories - as we live through experiences and histories of erasure. There's lots to celebrate in telling stories of our selves and communities, but there's also so much that's...hard.

So how do we tackle sensitive issues responsibly? How do we do our own stories justice, in ways that support the reader and help us to connect with others?

Your teacher Khale McHurst brings their experience of making, sharing and publishing graphic-novel stories about mental illness, religious trauma and gendered violence to this hands-on workshop.

This event will be half social chats with a bunch of like minded queer people and half fun, educational and interactive workshop.

All workshops are taught by queers, for queers.

What we will cover?

This class will cover:

• How to flesh out memoir scenes
• How to write about real people in your life
• How to handle sensitive topics in a way that is ethical and appropriat

While the teacher is very mindful of the impacts of talking about challenging topics, in allowing space for conversation within the class a trigger warning is given that this class may contain topics on mental illness and gendered violence.

Who will be teaching? 

Khale McHurst (they/them) has written graphic memoir about mental illness, queerness, open relationships and gendered violence. Khale is committed to helping people to have conversations about difficult topics by sharing comics that make them more accessible. Khale is self-taught and has been writing memoir for 13 years.
