Event description

🌈 Walk Through Darwin’s Queer History with Dr Dino Hodge! 🏳️‍🌈

Join us for a fabulous and eye-opening walking tour as part of the Darwin Pride Festival’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, guided by none other than queer historian and activist Dr Dino Hodge!

We begin at Lyons Cottage, diving into the secret same-sex desires of European explorers and wartime servicemen. From there, we trace the emergence of Darwin’s post-war queer social scene, the glitzy spark that lit the fire for our local LGBTQIASB+ community.

We’ll visit the first office of the AIDS Council, reflecting on the bravery and resilience shown during the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s. Then we celebrate the 1990s, when lesbian and gay lives took centre stage in Darwin’s vibrant cultural scene.

Our final stop honours the fierce ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’, who in 1992 marched into NT Parliament to exorcise the homophobia blocking anti-discrimination reforms, clearing the way for a more equal future.

This is more than a tour - it’s a tribute to four decades of pride, protest, passion, and progress. Come walk with us through the living history of our rainbow city!
