Description

In every tutorial, there are students who rarely speak and we've been trained to read their silence as disengagement, shyness, or a problem to fix. But recent research shows that even teachers looking at the same quiet classroom interpret what they're seeing in fundamentally different ways. Without a shared framework, we end up designing learning environments based on assumptions we've never examined.

This workshop offers two complementary frameworks for thinking differently about quiet students. Universal Design for Learning 3.0 provides the design philosophy to be proactive, identity-aware, and explicit about how systemic bias shapes who gets to participate. 4E Cognition (Embodied, Embedded, Extended, Enactive) provides the diagnostic lens and a practical vocabulary for identifying where barriers to participation actually live and how to redesign for them.

This workshop is open to educators and teaching and learning staff from across the higher education sector.

Learning objectives

Engaging with this workshop will help you to:

  • Draw on UDL 3.0 and recent research to move beyond deficit-based interpretations to reframe student silence.

  • Apply the 4E Cognition framework to diagnose where barriers to participation exist in your own teaching contexts.

  • Redesign learning activities and assessments to reduce extraneous cognitive load and create multiple meaningful pathways for student participation and demonstration of learning.

Testimonials

"Very informative presentation and using underpinning theory. I was not familiar with 4E model. Also liked use of presentation of info and reflection and activities." - Participant from Health

"I appreciated having the opportunity to reflect on my own practice and consider new strategies. The case studies presented in the final section were helpful in this regard." - Participant from School of Social Sciences.
