QURANIC ORIGINS OF RATIONAL THEOLOGY

A study of Islamic theology based on Taqrib al-`Aqa’id al-Saniyya, written by the late-Maliki jurist and theologian Imam Muhammad `Ilish of the 19th century.

Qur'anic Origins of Rational Theology (Reasoned Faith 101) is an introductory course designed to revive traditional Islamic scholarship within a contemporary context. This course is based on Taqrīb al-ʿAqāʾid al-Saniyyah by the esteemed Mālikī scholar, Imām Muḥammad ʿIlīsh, a 19th-century jurist whose works remain pivotal in various Islamic disciplines.

Through this beginner-level course, students will engage in a thorough exploration of foundational Islamic beliefs. Taqrīb al-ʿAqāʾid is widely regarded as an exemplary primer in theology, containing all the essential elements of Islamic creed in a concise, accessible format. Imām ʿIlīsh’s approach uniquely connects the tenets of faith to Qur'anic verses and supports them with rational proofs, making it particularly valuable for students seeking a reasoned understanding of core beliefs.

Through this course, students will explore fundamental concepts of Islamic creed, learning how classical theology harmonizes rational inquiry with Qur'anic foundations. Each session provides insights into the core principles of belief and demonstrates the logical reasoning underpinning the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah.

In addition, participants will receive a complete English translation of the text in PDF format and have the unique opportunity to earn an ijazah (certification) in the text upon passing the final exam.

This course is ideal for students beginning their journey in the sacred sciences as well as for anyone seeking a structured, intellectually engaging study of the core tenets of Islamic theology.

By the end of this course, you’ll gain a clear understanding of core Islamic beliefs about Allah and His Messengers, learn the key evidence and reasoning that support these beliefs, and see how they connect to the Qur’an. 

You’ll also appreciate the contributions of Muslim scholars and understand the importance of logical reasoning in Islamic faith, as well as explore the main areas of Islamic theology.
