Histories, Resistance and Belonging
Join us for a special screening of QUT student, staff, and alumni films that explore queer lives across generations, from historical struggles for visibility and equality through to contemporary stories of identity, community, and self-determination.
Together, these works reveal the ongoing efforts required to create safer and more inclusive spaces while celebrating the resilience, creativity, and courage of LGBTQIA+ communities.
The expected runtime is approximately 80 minutes (excluding intermission).

Oxford Street (2020)
Set in Sydney in 1997, 'Oxford Street' examines the now-discredited Gay Panic Defence through the story of a barrister forced to choose between a career-defining case and his relationship with his daughter. Queen's Land (2024)
A lively exploration of drag, repression, resistance, and community during the Joh Bjelke-Petersen era. Through the experiences of Queensland drag icon Destiny Rogers, 'Queen's Land' recounts a period when queer life persisted despite policing, discrimination, and political conservatism. The Queer History of QUT (2026)
Drawing on archival materials and personal testimony, this documentary uncovers the stories of staff and students who fought for greater inclusion at QUT. From landmark discrimination cases to campaigns for transgender workplace rights, it celebrates those who transformed the university for future generations. ACE (2023)

Uncovered Lives (2022)
'Uncovered Lives' follows filmmaker Kai Wharton as he investigates barriers faced by transgender Australians seeking gender-affirming healthcare. Drawing on both personal experience and broader advocacy concerns, the film examines the consequences of inadequate Medicare coverage and the significant personal and financial burdens experienced by many transgender people pursuing medical care. Brotherboy (2021)
