Event description

Rags to riches

**************************

When: Saturday 28th June from 10am - 5pm

Turn your beloved old T-shirts into something entirely new.

We all have that stack of well-worn, well-loved tees—too special to throw away, but no longer getting the love they deserve. In this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop, you'll honour those faded favourites by transforming them into a brand-new wearable piece, stitched with memory and style.

Choose your own adventure:
• Loose, comfy pants with pockets
• A long-sleeve top with your choice of crew neck or hood
• A scrappy, patchwork-style dress

Over the course of the workshop, you’ll learn essential DIY fashion skills including:
• Basic sewing techniques (machine + hand)
• Using an overlocker
• Simple pattern drafting
• Patchworking with knit/ T.shirt fabrics
• Mending small holes or weak spots as needed

And- most importantly- the confidence to create your own garment from start to finish!!!

No prior sewing experience is required—just bring your own pile of clean T-shirts (around 5–8 is a great start), a sewing machine or overlocker if you have one- and I will provide the tools, guidance, and creative atmosphere to help you bring your new garment to life.

Leave with something unique, wearable, and rich in personal history.

I teach from a Queer and Neurodivergent lens. I hope to cater to different learning styles, most of this workshop is very hands-on with demonstrations +explanations. Please reach out if you have any specific learning needs.

Please let me know if you need to borrow a sewing machine, to ensure I have enough :)

Facilitated by Sarah Seahorse - who is an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist, costume designer, milliner, craftivist and community artist. She specialises in fashion, headwear, and wearable art that serves as a powerful commentary on social, environmental, and political issues. Sarah was the resident milliner + art finisher at Circus Oz for a decade, she has won two awards at the prestigious World of Wearable Art Awards in Aotearoa,  is a member of artist collective Fast Fashun, a self described trash-troll, lover of found, upcycled and recycled materials and loves to generously share her lifetime of creative skills.

A big believer in the transformative power of self-expression- especially in community or group contexts. Sarah aims to create inclusive spaces where people can engage in creative activities outside of formal education. Teaching from a Queer and Neurodivergent lens, she hopes to cater to different learning styles, with hands-on demonstrations + explanations. Please reach out if you have any specific learning needs.

This workshop will be held on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Merri Bek area. I recognise their continuing custodianship and care of land, waters and culture, and pay my respects to Elders past and present. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
