Raise The Age Campaign
Event description
The 'Raise The Age' campaign seeks to raise the criminal age of responsibility in Western Australia from 10 to 14 years old. In light of the recent transferral of the 17 kids from Banksia Hill Detention Centre to Casuarina's maximum security adult prison, Amnesty International UWA believes reform in the youth justice system is needed now more than ever to prevent further neglect of the human rights of Western Australians, especially our First Nations peoples.
That is why we have sought after organisations championing this movement such as Social Reinvestment WA in order to help students at UWA understand what is going on, what SRWA do, and how students can help. Amnesty UWA warmly welcomes you to watch a documentary screening of 'In My Blood It Runs' and to listen to a panel discussion with members from Social Reinvestment WA to learn about the campaign. Free popcorn will be provided to attendees.
We also acknowledge that this event is taking on place on Whadjuk Noongar land and we would like to pay our respects to the Indigenous Australians Elders, past present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded.
