Thu, 8 Oct, 12pm - 1pm AEDT

Description

In this presentation, Tanja will discuss her research situated at a regional Australian high school. Guided by Participatory Action Research principles, and using quantitative and qualitative methods, three connected studies explore:

· How students think and feel about climate change, and their own agency to contribute to societal climate responses
· The role of social norms at school and how misperceiving others’ climate concerns undermines students’ sense of agency
· Barriers and enablers for teachers’ agency in educating students about climate change in regional contexts.

This research reveals systemic challenges for supporting teaching and learning about climate change in schools. However, it also highlights the potential of schools as critical sites for students to participate in ‘collaborative action’ – described by students as meaningful, socially-connected environmental projects that create tangible change in their community. The implications of this research for strengthening climate change education policy and practice will be discussed.
