Re-imagining community engagement
Description
This in-person workshop will explore one of the emerging themes that community engagement practitioners have been raising this year - that of the role of community in community engagement.
There is a growing recognition that communities are not passive people waiting for projects to come along.
They are complex, changing, diverse, creative and increasingly frustrated that they are not treated with respect and courtesy.
Communities know their places and they value them - and they want to help shape them if they are going to change. The way most engagement practices approach communities is highly structured, limited in time and information. We don't engage communities as partners, as experts, or as having any influence.
What if we change this? What if, together, we unpack engagement and rebuild with community at the centre, at the beginning, as the future?
What will this look like? How will it work? How can we make it sustainable?
This workshop will unpack and re-create community engagement.
