Event description

We are finally digging into a tough read - "The Delectable Negro: Human Consumption and Homoeroticism within U.S. Slave Culture" by Vincent Woodard.

Bring your copy of the book (digital or hard copy) and be prepared to engage. I recognize that the material is dense, however everyone should have at least read the introduction and one chapter.  It will create context for the conversation. Below are a few of the questions we will explore to jumpstart the talk.

+ After gaining an understanding of consumption, is it still happening? If so, what's an example?

+ What was your gut reaction to the reading?

+ How does Woodard's work contribute to a broader understanding of the history and legacy of slavery?

+ In what ways does the book explore the concept of the "parasite" and how does it apply to the relationship between slaveholders and enslaved people?

A note: As a connector and community builder, I am incredibly passionate about creating safe spaces inside of my events. Because of the sensitivity of the topic, I am kindly, firmly requesting that we enter the space with mindfulness and mutual respect.

Ciao.
