Reading/Signing: Madelaine Brauner Landry's "Caro Govanni"
Event description
CARO GIOVANNI is the latest novel from Madelaine Brauner Landry. Published this January, inspired by correspondence found in her father's Army trunk -- historical fiction about the courageous and resilient women of the Italian Resistance in WWII.
Following the liberation of Italy from Axis troops in 1945, a popular referendum on the institutional form of the state was called the next year and resulted in voters choosing the replacement of the monarchy with a republic.
The 1946 Italian general election to elect the Constituent Assembly of Italy was held on the same day.
Women's suffrage in Italy was finally introduced on the 1st of February 1945 because of a due right and was achieved by women participating in the struggle for liberation from fascism. On the 2nd of June 1946, the Italian women voted for the first time for the Institutional referendum (the choice between monarchy and republic) and for the constitutional Assembly. The Women of the Italian Resistance!
