Ready to Respond: Supporting Communities Through Disaster - Ipswich

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop was postponed from 8 to 25 September.

When disasters strike, community members often turn to local volunteers, community organisations, neighbourhood centres and trusted community leaders for support. Being prepared can make a significant difference in how effectively we support others during challenging times.

The Ready to Respond workshop is a practical, interactive training opportunity designed to strengthen your knowledge, skills and confidence to support your community before, during and after disaster events. Participants will gain valuable tools, resources and practical strategies that can be applied in their volunteer, community or professional roles.

Part 1: Emergency Preparedness and Community Resilience

Build your understanding of disaster preparedness and learn practical ways to support your community before, during and after emergencies.

Topics include:

• Where to find trusted information before, during and after a disaster.

• Understand local disaster risks and how they may impact your household and community.

• Simple steps to improve personal preparedness.

• Understanding what resources are available to vulnerable people after a disaster.

Part 2: Responding - Accidental Counselling Skills

This session will provide practical skills that can be applied during disasters, community emergencies and everyday community support situations.

In this practical session, Karen Prestidge from Bellbird Training & Consultancy will provide participants with practical techniques to confidently support people experiencing distress while looking after their own wellbeing.

Participants will learn how to:

• Use key communication and listening micro-skills.

• Understand the needs of a person experiencing crisis or distress.

• Respond appropriately and confidently to a person's immediate needs.

• Establish and maintain helpful personal and professional boundaries.

• Connect individuals with further support services when required.

• Recognise and manage their own wellbeing needs while supporting others.

Cost

There is no cost to attend. Participants must register to ensure we have captured dietary requirements.
