ATMS invites all natural medicine educators to this online Education Forum

Assessment - that old chestnut

Assessment is critical as it sits at the heart of all our teaching and learning practices. It shapes our practitioners and this informs the integrity and reputation of our profession. The education landscape is changing swiftly and the way we assess and guide our students to become excellent, competent and safe practitioners needs to change as well. There are many challenges to assessment including plagiarism and how to instill academic integrity in students, what constitutes effective feedback, what makes authentic assessment, and constructive evaluation in supervised clinics. We invite you to join us in a discussion and sharing of experiences and strategies in this key element of good education.

Key issues we will be looking at include:

• how do we prevent and deal with plagiarism?
• how do we create authentic assessment for our students that will promote their employability and competence?
• Reasonable adjustment to assessment

Speakers

Peter Berryman – President of ATMS, is qualified as a Homeopath, Naturopath, Educator and Health Scientist. Peter has been in continuous private practice as a natural medicine practitioner since 1986, and has been involved in Natural Medicine education and clinical training since 1990. Peter has been ATMS President since 2017 and sits on numerous ATMS Committees.

Professor Sandra Grace – ATMS Director, is a leader in natural medicine education, practice and research. She is the Deputy Chair of Academic Board (Teaching and Learning), and Chair of the Accreditation Committee, Southern Cross University. Her leadership roles in ATMS include Chair of the Academic Review Committee, Editor of JATMS, and a long-standing member of the Research Committee. Sandra is renowned for improving the quality of natural medicine education in Australia, and beyond.

Dr Airdre Grant – ARC member, is an author and academic with extensive experience in education. Her key focus has been education in complementary medicine - a focus of her doctoral thesis. She consults to the industry, such as the TEQSA Panel of Experts which looks at accreditation and industry standards.

Jacqui Casey is a Senior Design Academic with Torrens University and an Academic Integrity Officer for the Design & Creative Technology vertical. As an AIO she works closely with the Director of AI, establishing proactive campaigns to instil a culture of integrity across the university as well as academics, to create resources and guides that help not only students but staff also in their understanding of academic integrity. As an academic, Jacqui is able to support lecturers in contextualising academic integrity in their classroom delivery and support assessment working groups in assessment design.

Alexandra Espinosa is a national VQF trainer/assessor and course coordinator at Australian Learning Group, with 13 years of experience in education and training. 

She is passionate about bringing creativity and positive psychology to the learning and assessment environment. 

Neroli Tomlinson- Educator: Diploma of Remedial Massage, Cohort coordinator and Blended Learning Champion at VU Polytechnic.

Neroli has been a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist and Sports Trainer since 2014. Neroli has worked with reputable public and private VET sectors across Victoria with both local and international students, where she has been training and assessing within the Remedial Massage programs for several years. Her content delivery in face to face, remote and blended classrooms as well as student clinics and external placement has given her diverse skills and experience in supporting learners achieve across multifaceted platforms.

In 2020, Neroli was recognised for her efforts as one of only four Teacher Of The Year nominees in the wider Victoria University Polytechnic.
