Diet for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Autoimmune disease affects more than 7 percent of the population and rates are rising. Rheumatoid
arthritis is one of the most common autoimmune diseases and currently affects approximately 95,000
people in New Zealand and 456,000 in Australia.
In this presentation I will outline the contributing factors to autoimmune diseases, and cover general
principals of diet, nutrition and lifestyle that can be used in treatment. I’ll cover the mechanisms by which diet can make a difference via gut microbiome, intestinal permeability and inflammation.
I’ll also present an overview of diet intervention studies that have been carried out in RA, and what interventions show the most promise.Â
Presenter: Julianne Taylor
Julianne has many years of experience working with a range of nutrition clients and has a special interest in diet for auto-immune disease and inflammatory conditions. In her postgraduate studies Julianne has been investigating dietary interventions for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). In 2015 she carried out qualitative research on the experience of people with RA using a paleo diet or Auto-Immune Protocol (AIP). In her current PhD research Julianne conducted a pilot intervention study using the AIP diet in Rheumatoid Arthritis.
