Safe Co-Prescribing - common drugs and complementary medicines

  • Foundational overview of drug metabolism - breakdown and excretion.  Including known influencing factors like time of day, with/out food, alcohol etc. 
    • Liver function.  CYP enzymes - pathways influenced and their role in drug metabolism
    • kidney function
    • digestive health
  • 5 drugs then to be covered.  Brief history for each, explanation of pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics.  Discuss the potential and known interactions between the drug and complementary medicines.  Including herbs, nutrients and foods.
    •  Statins
    • ACE Inhibitors
    • Metformin
    • PPIs
    • SSRIs

Learning outcomes

  • Participants will develop an understanding of how drugs are metabolised in the human body
  • They will be able to explain the various pathways for metabolism
  • Participants will be able to name the most common drugs prescribed in Australia and describe what their function is, their impact on the body and how they are excreted
  • For each of these drugs, participants will be able to identify which complementary medicines are likely to interact with the drug and explain why this is the case.
  • Participants will be able to identify the complementary medicines for which to be cautious in using with the prescribed drug and provide alternate recommendation where appropriate.

Presenter: Tracee Blythe

Tracee is a naturopath of 17 years and has a goal for the community to have greater access to quality complementary medicines, whilst receiving the best evidence-based advice from qualified practitioners.

Starting her career, the early years were spent in health food stores and pharmacy.  Connecting with, serving, and supporting her many patients to find their best health.  Tracee then spent more than a decade delivering education in the practitioner supplement space with a leading supplement brand in Western Australia.

Now running her own business, Tracee is delivers online education to pharmacists, in addition to coaching those who want to grow their skills, knowledge and success with evidence based complementary medicines.

When she’s not growing veggies or out running with friends – you’ll find Tracee with her nose in a book or down the rabbit hole of the newest research, firmly believing that there is always more to learn!
