Understanding Gut Issues when Dealing with Fussy Eaters

Children with picky or restricted eating behaviours will often present with gastrointestinal issues which are both the cause and affect of the difficulties around food. In order to effectively address the fussy eating, the gut issues must be a core focus of the treatment plan.

Gut issues commonly identified in fussy eaters include constipation and reflux. Some less common, but very significant presentations include coeliac disease, eosinophilic oesophagitis and parasitic infections.

Doing a thorough assessment of the child at the outset of treatment is the key to understanding what is preventing the child accepting a wide range of foods and having a robust appetite.

This webinar will take an in depth look at resolving constipation in fussy eaters when the usual levers of dietary manipulation are not available.

The treatment of reflux, coeliac disease, Eosinophilic oesophagitis and parasites will also be discussed, with particular emphasis on children with restrictive eating.

Presenter: Lisa Moane

B.Eng (Mech and Food), MSc Food Science, Adv Dip Nut Med, BHSc Naturopathy

Lisa Moane completed a B. Eng in Mechanical & Food Engineering (1998) and a Masters In Food Science (1999). Her Masters research project focussed on the high pressure preservation of food products to reduce pathogenic E. Coli populations

After working for 15 years in the processed food industry, she decided refocus her attention on health.

After qualifying as a Nutritionist (Adv Dip Nut Med, 2016) and starting to work with children, she realized that the foods she knew would help them were not achievable for these families. She needed another tool in my toolbox.

In 2020 she became trained as an SOS Feeding Therapist and completed my BHSc Naturopathy in 2021.

She now combines everything she have learned from food science, nutrition, naturopathy and feeding therapy to provide a truly holistic approach to feeding issues.

She lives in the Illawarra region of NSW with husband, three kids, seven chickens, dog and cat.
