Part 1- Understanding people with mental disorders
We all know about depression and anxiety, but how much do you know about mania, delusion, conversion disorder and trichotillomania? Can you differentiate depression due to qi deficiency and depression due to qi constraint? In the first part of this series, we will provide a comprehensive but accessible overview of mental disorders, teach you to identify relevant signs and symptoms, and train you how to differentiate the main (Chinese medicine) patterns relevant to these conditions. This workshop will provide natural medicine practitioners with diagnostic skills that enable them to understand their patients better.
Part 2 - The aetiology of mental disorders - the quest for the root cause
How many factors influence our emotions? Five? Six? What makes our patient so vulnerable to stressful events? In the second part of this series, we will describe the physiological reactions related with our emotions and explore the multiple physical, social, climatic, spatiotemporal, and sensorial factors that affect emotions. We will present the causes of mental disorders, with an emphasis on the constitutional factors that can be modified with natural medicine and prevent patients to be vulnerable to future stressful events. We will finish by providing the methods that Chinese medicine practitioners use to manage mental disorders.
Part 3 - Managing mental disorders naturally - challenges and opportunities
How can you individualise your therapeutic approach to mental disorders to optimise treatment outcomes? What can you do if your patient does not or cannot follow your lifestyle recommendations? What if they don’t stop talking during the session? In the third part of this series, we will present the scientific evidence of the efficacy of natural medicine for mental disorders and explain how to individualise natural medicine to increase treatment outcomes. We will also present the challenges posed by mental health patients and practical methods to overcome these challenges.
