Red Cross First Aid / CPR / AED Instructor Certification & Training

For For Individuals Wanting To Become A Certified American Red Cross Instructors

Certification: 2-Year Red Cross Instructor Certification Issued After Successful Course Completion

Prerequisites: Students must possess a current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certification from the American Red Cross or another accepted organization: American Heart Association, National Safety Council, ASHI, ECSI, or Canadian Red Cross (please verify if you are not sure) as well as an online pre-training that will be assigned at the time of enrollment.

Instructor Training Course Overview

In order to complete the course, students must arrive with prerequisites complete and be in attendance from start to finish on the in-person day of training. Instructor candidates will also need to successfully demonstrate teaching techniques discussed in the class during two mandatory practice-teaching sessions. There is a mandatory written test, which must be passed as part of the online pre-training before attending the classroom session.

Topics Covered In This Class

  • Program Introduction – Once prerequisites have been verified, the instructor candidates will be provided with an overview of the Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED curriculum, equipment and classroom requirements, explanation of instruction manual layout, and background information regarding the science and benchmarks used for classes.
  • Education Theory – Building off knowledge covered in the online pre-training, instructor candidates will review and practice concepts of learning and facilitating student discussions.
  • Skill Session and Scenario Instruction – Instructor candidates will go over and tools used for teaching and assessing skills, how to observe and evaluate student performance, and how to coach and prompt students with effective positive and corrective feedback during instruction sessions and review scenarios.
  • Practice-Teaching Sessions – All instructor candidates must complete three practice teaching session in a mock class, using Red Cross materials and covering previously discussed topics: one discussion, one skill session, and one scenario.
  • Red Cross Programs – The wrap-up of the instructor course will go into detail regarding courses available to teach under the First Aid/CPR/AED program, how to utilize the American Red Cross Learning Center, report activity, and award certificates.

Location & Parking

Class is given at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Parking can be found in the lot behind the church, on Westview Drive. After parking, follow the sidewalk closest to Westview and take the first right before courtyard to take you straight to the training room.

All Day Classes (Lunch & Breaks)

Lunch is not provided, but a 90 minute break for lunch and practice teaching preparation is incorporated into the class at approximately 11:30. Please plan to bring a lunch or eat at a nearby establishment.

What To Wear

Please wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move about in. Please keep in mind some activities will involve getting on the floor.

Don't Be Late To Class

Class will begin promptly at 9:00 am and students cannot be admitted after 9:20 am. Refunds cannot be issued for students who are absent or tardy to class. In the event a class is canceled, refunds will be issued or you may reschedule at no additional cost.

Cell-Phone Policy

We ask that you have your phones turned to silent for the duration of the class. You may return calls and messages during scheduled breaks. In the event of an emergency, please quietly excuse yourself from class.
