Red Rain

Red Rain is a site-responsive performance work-in-progress exploring the relationship between precipitation, place, and climate change. It is the creation of Jocelyn Ho, Jordan, Lacey, Toby Gifford, and Mareike Dobewall. The work draws on site-specific moisture data — dew formation, rainfall intensity, and water movement across surfaces — to shape its interpretation and staging. At its heart are large-scale graphic scores, painted by Mareike Dobewall in direct response to moisture data. These serve simultaneously as visual art and musical notation, guiding performers through the musical movements that weave together extended piano techniques, electric bass, custom singing bowls, contrabass clarinet, live electronics with real-time projection. Rooted in co-composition and improvisation, the piece treats nature as the original composer, with performers acting as interpreters between the environment and the audience. This performance brings their Harrigans Lane residency to a close, offering a glimpse into how the work evolves.

About the artists

Mareike Dobewall is a theatre maker specialising in spatial dramaturgy and graphic score design.

Jocelyn Ho is a pianist known for her work in prepared and extended piano techniques.

Jordan Lacey is a performer and sound artist working with electric bass and custom-made crucible singing bowls.

Toby Gifford is a musician and technologist performing on contrabass clarinet with live electronics and real-time projection.
