We are thrilled to hear from Ari Comben and Dr Marji Puotinen on their 'Reflections from the Homeward Bound Geospatial Network - Two people, two journeys, and one shared experience of leadership'.

Ari Comben

Ari is a Geospatial Analyst and marine scientist with over a decade of experience across public and private sectors, currently serving at the NSW Reconstruction Authority. With a strong international background, she has led cross-border collaborations and applied her expertise to support disaster mitigation and climate adaptation. Ari transforms natural hazard data into actionable insights that enhance community resilience. Passionate about location intelligence, she champions women’s development, supports early career professionals, and integrates nature-based solutions with digital innovation to drive sustainable progress and protect the environment.

Dr Marji Puotinen

Marji is a geographer with extensive expertise in applying GIS and associated technologies to spatially complex ecological questions, particularly modelling the dynamics of stressors on marine benthos (coral reefs) and biota (fish, megafauna). Marji's aim to conduct research that helps design effective conservation strategies for key ecosystems like coral reefs by improving our understanding of how such ecosystems are affected by broad scale stressors (tropical cyclone generated waves, thermal stress, pollutants) now and under future climates. An additional recent focus is quantitative marine benthic habitat modelling and associated survey design.
