Join us for a community gathering to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day, 15 August 1945, marking the end of World War Two.

“Reflections on VP Day” honours local stories from Capalaba, Birkdale, Thorneside, and Wellington Point – stories of courage, resilience, and community spirit during a time of global conflict and change.

This special event features performances, storytelling, and historical reflections to acknowledge some unique moments that took place in our community while the 'War in the Pacific' raged on, until lasting peace was finally declared.

🎼 Program Highlights:

  • 🎵 Performance by Redland City Band & Birkdale State School Choir

  • 🕊️ "The War is Over!" – Celebrating the joy and relief of peace

  • 📖 Dante & Hughie’s Story – A child’s memory of the end of war

  • 📡 The US Army High Frequency Radio Receiving Station at Capalaba/Birkdale under the command of General Douglas MacArthur

  • 👩‍🌾 The Women’s Land Army in Birkdale

  • 🌏 The meaning of VP Day for our community

  • 🌺 Commemoration & Tribute to those who served and sacrificed

  • Peace Pole Ceremony"May Peace Prevail on Earth"
