Description

This three-part session course is designed for current and emerging leaders working across alcohol and other drug (AOD) and mental health (MH) services who want to strengthen reflective practice within their teams, their supervision practices, and organisational systems.

Across three practical workshop sessions, participants will build their understanding of reflective practice, develop skills to facilitate reflective conversations in complex service environments, and explore how reflective practice can be embedded into everyday leadership, governance and cross-sector ways of working.

The course uses case-based learning, peer discussion, culturally grounded practices (Yarning Circles), applied tools and between-session activities so participants can test approaches in their own workplace and bring their reflections back to the group.

What we'll cover:

Workshop 1: Foundations of Structured Reflective Practice in Complex Systems
Tuesday 29 September 2026, 3 hrs

Build a shared foundation for reflective practice supervision in MH and ATOD contexts. This session introduces reflective practice as a discipline, clarifies its role in managing complexity and uncertainty and establishes the psychological safety and trust required for peer reflection.

Workshop 2: Application. Supervising Reflection in Real Practice Contexts
Tuesday 1 December 2026, 3 hrs

Developing capability to facilitate reflective practice with staff working in complex, emotionally charged environments. This session moves from individual reflection to facilitating reflection across professional and sectoral boundaries, with particular attention to the emotional and cultural dimensions of shared care.

Workshop 3: Embedding Reflective Practice in Teams and Organisations
Tuesday 16 February 2027, 3 hrs

Moving from individual competence to organisational reflective capacity. This session helps leaders turn reflective practice into sustainable systems, embedding it within governance, quality processes and everyday culture.

OPTIONAL Follow up session
Tuesday 30 March 2027, 2 hrs

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply structured reflective practice models within supervision, team processes and service delivery contexts

  • Facilitate psychologically safe reflective conversations in complex, high-risk and emotionally demanding environments

  • Use case-based reflective tools to support staff working with co-occurring mental health and AOD concerns

  • Strengthen collective reflective capability within teams and across organisational systems

  • Embed reflective practice into routine leadership and governance processes across MH and AOD sectors, extending learning beyond cohort-based learning circles with practitioners

Attendance:

This is a connected three-part short course, with each workshop building on the previous session. Attendance at all three workshops is required. Participants will also complete short, practical activities between each session within their own workplace.

An optional two-hour follow-up session will be offered approximately one month after Workshop 3. This session will provide an opportunity to reflect on implementation progress, troubleshoot challenges and share learning about embedding reflective practice within organisations.
