In light of the current COVID-19 restrictions, the opening night for Carclew's SALA exhibition Refractions will now take place across two shifts.

INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS
During the booking process you will have the option to book into two individual artist sessions at the event, both with strictly limited capacity:
BENCHED
A one-on-one theatre experience performed by Jamila Main, $20/person, approx 10mins duration. 1 guest per session.
Jamila Main, actor and award-winning playwright, invites you to join them on the bench for an intimate rumination on athleticism within a body whose access needs subvert the assumed binary of disability.
WHICH MADE THIS PLACE HOME
An immersive film screening by Maddie Grammatopoulos, approx 10mins duration. 6 guests per session.
Which Made This Place Home is an immersive film piece, documenting a series of poignant moments in a family home through the eyes of various household objects.
Benched, a one-on-one theatre experience performed by Jamila Main, approx 10mins duration. 1 guest per session.
Which Made This Place Home, an immersive film screening by Maddie Grammatopoulos, approx 12mins duration. 6 guests per session.
THE EXHIBITION
Inspired by ‘refraction’, the act of light passing through a glass vessel at one angle on entry, and refracting to another upon exit, the Carclew Sharehouse Residents act similarly, with creativity. Each artist utilises the innate human experience of creativity and creation that enters into their being, refracts it at a different, unique angle, to produce a distinctive style or channel of art.
In this analogy, not only can the artist's being or body be thought of as similar to a glass vessel, but so can Carclew House. All eight residents practice from the Carclew House and allow its presence to influence and shape their work. A unique annual experience, the 2021 Carclew residents have a tremendous amount of talent, creativity, opinions, narratives, experiences and techniques to share.
The foyer and ballroom galleries will transform into a kaleidoscope of artistic refractions, with live performances, an interactive film experience, vivid and vibrant paintings, animations and illustrations. With topics explored such as disability, mental health, human connection, belonging and physical form and movement, the residents showcase not only their diverse talents, but their deeply personal and moving experiences.
Refractions will present works by painters George Gilles and Mali Isabel, animation / illustrator Harrison Vial, actor and playwright Jamila Main, filmmaker and director Maddie Grammatopoulos, and interdisciplinary collaborative Motus Collective (Felicity Boyd and Zoe Gay), curated by Christina Lauren.
Carclew acknowledges Refractions takes place on Kaurna Country, and we pay our respects to Kaurna elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded.
