Refugee Action Collective Harp Concert Fundraiser with Katia Mestrovic
Event description
The Refugee Action Collective - Victoria is a volunteer organisation that campaigns for refugees and people seeking asylum to be given a fair go, to have the chance to rebuild their lives with confidence.
- Current laws and policies cause unnecessary harm to thousands of men, women and children at huge public cost, and must be reformed.
- Media stories about refugees and people seeking asylum often buys into political fear creation. RAC works for better community understanding of the issues.
Come along and enjoy some peaceful music and afternoon tea!
The concert is a fund raiser to help RAC-Vic continue its important campaign. All funds raised will be used to hold rallies, conduct social media campaigns, print fliers, hold educational forums and policy discussions, get out into the public with regular stalls with relevant information, t-shirts and petitions and hold our regular weekly meetings, 6.30pm Mondays at the Kathleen Syme Library in Carlton or on Zoom (Check the www.rac-vic.orgwebsite for more details.)
Accomplished harpist Katia Mestrovic has kindly donated her time and extraordinary talent to allow this concert to occur.
Katia started playing harp at the age of 8 with Xanya Mamunya (student of Alice Chalifoux). During adolescence, she broadened her horizons with learning languages, living overseas (in Spain, France, Germany and Croatia), teaching English, and rallying for Human Rights causes. After much life experience, Katia decided to fully dedicate herself to the harp.
Since, she graduated from The Sydney Conservatorium of Music with High Distinction in Harp Performance (2022) - mentored by Alice Giles AM. She was a semi-finalist in The Dutch World Harp Competition (April 2024); won third place in the BASEL International Harp Competition (September 2023); was awarded the Quinquin Foundation Scholarship for Young Talents in Classical Music (2021-2022), The William and Marie Souter Encouragement Awards for Aspiring Concert Stage Instrumentalists (2018-2020), and the Bachelor of Music Scholarship for Excellence (2017).
Katia also composes new music for solo and chamber harp. Currently, she is commissioned to write for “Penta Harp Ensemble” - a five harp ensemble. Previously, she’s completed projects for the Hush Foundation (a marimba and harp duet); the World Harp Competition (trio for viola, flute and harp); has two published works in the AMEB grade 7 Syllabus; and has written two modern classical harp books (for lever and pedal harp).
She is currently freelance performing and teaching in Melbourne.
