Regent parrots - a day of fun and discovery

Join us, the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board and the Nature Foundation, at Murbpook Nature Reserve for a day of family fun and discovery. 

The 360 ha wetland, on the western side of the River Murray, has been owned by the Nature Foundation since 2020 and is a safe haven for a great variety of plants and animals, including the vulnerable regent parrot.  Take a tour with us to see these magnificent birds in their natural habitat, discover what they eat, how they nest and what we are doing to help ensure their survival.

Heather Freeman, author of a new children’s book Papaltata and Pangku – An Australian Regent Parrot Story will be attending for a personalised book reading by the lagoon. This new children’s book tells of local communities getting involved to help protect regent parrots and their habitat.  There will also be nature-based activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The event is suitable for all ages.

Murbpook is only open to the public for special events.

There is no vehicle access to the site and cars will need to be left at the entrance gate, from where there is a 400 metre walk on uneven ground down to the lagoon. While we will follow some paths, be prepared to walk on patches of uneven ground and around tripping hazards. Please feel free to email with any questions regarding accessibility. 

Please wear weather appropriate clothing, including a hat, suitable walking shoes and bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a keep cup and a water bottle. 

Tea, coffee and water will be available and you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy by the lagoon, please refer to the fruit fly restrictions when travelling from outside the area.

Meet at the entrance gate ready for an 11am start and you will be directed down to the lagoon.
