Event description

Following the success of our April event, the Manawatū Business Chamber would like to invite you to join us for another in-depth discussion and Q&A as we delve into the region's economic trends, challenges and opportunities.

Brought to you in partnership with the Central Economic Development Agency (CEDA), the Palmerston North City (PNCC) and Manawatū District Councils, (MDC) this event will look at the latest economic insights for Manawatū.

Facilitated by MC Shivarn Stewart of Little and Loud, this panel event will include an economic overview from PNCC Economist Stacey Andrews, supported by Jeena Baines from MDC followed by an in-depth panel discussion featuring:

· Mat Hocken, Director at Grassmere Dairy

· Jordan Shilton, Business Development Manager for Novalabs

· Steph Sloane, Director and Senior Consultant at KS Agri

· And special guest, Darlene Rastrick, MSD Regional Public Service Commissioner for Manawatū-Whanganui

Inflation up until June 2024 was slightly above expectations, prompting the Reserve Bank to lower the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by 25 basis points in August – the first cut in over four years. Despite ongoing economic challenges, there is optimism, as lower inflation and interest rates are predicted through 2025.

The primary sector is seeing price improvements, especially in red meat and dairy, which will support farmgate milk prices. Input costs like feed and fuel have stabilised, declining by 0.7% since June 2024, compared to a peak inflation in 2022. This, along with falling interest rates, creates a better financial outlook for farmers, allowing investment in innovation, sustainability, and growth.

Come along as we unpack the latest data and insights available, and what this means for our regional economy and priority sectors.
