Event description

As Australia’s energy transition accelerates, regional communities are at the forefront of both the challenges and opportunities that come with this change.

In this seminar Nils Hay will share key findings from his recent Churchill Fellowship research into the impact of large-scale renewable and low-carbon energy project on regional communities. This work explored how regions across the US, UK, and Europe have been adapting to the shift to renewables over the past few decades. From economic development and workforce transitions to policy settings, community engagement and benefits, different jurisdictions have taken different approaches—some successful, others with lessons to be learned.

This event will explore key elements of Nils' research, including:

  • How regions overseas are managing the transition, and what’s working well
  • The role of planning, investment, and policy in securing long-term benefits
  • Strategies for supporting regional workforces and communities
  • Cautionary tales—what challenges other jurisdictions have faced, and how they’ve responded
  • What these insights could mean for regional Australia

There will be time for questions and discussion about the research and its possible implications, making this an opportunity to reflect on how Australia’s regions can navigate the energy transition in a way that maximises benefits for communities and local economies.

If you’re interested in the energy transition that is underway in regional Australia and what we can learn from international experience, come along and join the conversation.
