Relaxed, sensory-friendly morning at the South Australian Museum
Event description
A sensory-friendly evening for visitors of all ages, their families, friends, and support workers.
Come along to the Museum out of hours! Visitors with autism and other sensory or access requirements can enjoy a quieter, less crowded visit to the Museum. This is a chance to see all of our permanent galleries, and maybe discover something you've never noticed before!
While everyone is always welcome at the Museum, we acknowledge that sometimes the crowds and noise make visits harder for our neurodivergent visitors and those living with a disability. We will be altering some of the screens, lights and sounds around the Museum to make it a more sensory friendly experience.
Attendees can enjoy the Museum galleries and our sensory backpacks will also be available to borrow free of charge. Backpacks include noise cancelling headphones, a soft toy, a fidget toy and a set of communication cards. Backpacks will be loaned out on a first come first served basis.
This is a ticketed event for people with sensory needs and their accompanying family, friends or support workers. Please purchase a ticket for all attendees when you book.
This is a Pay What You Can event.
Please contribute what you can afford to give for each ticket and enjoy our relaxed, sensory-friendly morning. Our access programming is funded solely through donations and we're grateful for every contribution no matter how big or small. Your payment will help us to continue to present these programs into the future.
Tickets to our temporary exhibition RELICS: A New World Rises will be available for purchase at the door. Please be aware that this exhibition contains some higher sensory elements including moving parts, flickering video and repetitive lighting effects, which we are unable to turn off for this event. Tickets to this exhibition are not included in the pay what you can admission price. Please note that the ticket counter is not able to take cash payments and all ticket purchases will need to be via card.
Please note that the Museum café and shop will not be open during this event.
In March 2018, the Museum was declared an Autism Friendly Venue by Autism SA.
