Event description

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and Spudnik Press invite you to participate in a two-part workshop, the first held at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and the second held at Spudnik Press.

PLEASE NOTE: If you register for the free workshops, you must attend both.

Session 1
Held on Friday, August 15, from 5-8 pm at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, at 2320 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

Session 2
Held on Thursday, August 28, from 6-10 pm at Spudnik Press, at 1821 W Hubbard St., Suite 302, Chicago, IL 60622

Session 1

Dating as far back as the 7th century, relief printmaking is considered the oldest form of printmaking. An image is carved into a block of wood or linoleum, which is then inked and pressed to transfer the image. The tools are simple and approachable, but the possibilities are expansive.

In this introductory session, students will plan, carve, and print a small linoleum block. We will learn the process of transferring an image onto the block and techniques for creating line, shape, contrast, and texture. By the end of the session, we will print our images by hand. Students are welcome to continue working on their prints at home.

Friday, August 15, from 5-8 pm at UIMA, 2320 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL

Session 2

In this session, students will plan and carve a larger linoleum block and use the Conrad press to make their prints. We will learn how to mix and modify inks, paper handling, methods of registration, and how to finesse pressure on the press for the best results. We will also learn ways to bring color into our prints, such as gradient rainbow rolls, chine-colle, and reduction carving. Students can expect to take home a small edition of their prints.
Thursday, August 28, from 6-10 pm at Spudnik Press, 1821 W Hubbard St., Suite 302, Chicago, IL
