Remanufacturing in the Automotive Industry and Beyond

In order to achieve the ambitious targets proposed in the “European Green Deal” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 and to be climate-neutral by 2050, emissions in the transport sector must be significantly reduced. 

Electromobility promises new opportunities to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution. However, though the of battery-powered vehicles is steadily increasing, a circular economy for electric powertrains has not yet been established.

Remanufacturing is a technology for circular value creation that combines both ecological and economic potential. It refers to industrial reconditioning where a product with at least the functionality and performance of the original product is created from used parts and new components.

The focus of our research activities is on remanufacturing particularly within the automotive sector. We develop and optimize the entire remanufacturing process chain—from reverse logistics to disassembly and reassembly processes. This includes ecological and economic assessments to evaluate sustainability impacts, aiming to create efficient and environmentally responsible remanufacturing systems.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Döpper holds the Chair of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing at the University of Bayreuth and is Scientific Director for Manufacturing and Process Technology at Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, Stuttgart. He researches in the fields of additive innovation, data value creation, sustainable production and the circular economy.

After studying mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Frank began his career at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen/Germany before moving into industry. For more than twenty years, he worked in technology and investment management and as a site and production manager for international companies before he was appointed professor at the University of Bayreuth.
