A native of Cuba, René Izquierdo is one of the most expressive and influential classical guitarists of his generation. A sought-after performer, teacher, and recording artist, Izquierdo has appeared as a soloist and in chamber settings across North and South America, Europe, and Asia. His playing is known for its deep lyricism, refined technique, and passionate artistry—hallmarks of both his Cuban roots and European training.
Izquierdo is a graduate of the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Havana, the Yale University School of Music (where he studied under Benjamin Verdery), and the prestigious Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He has won numerous international competitions and awards, including top prizes at the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition and the Schadt String Competition.
A dedicated educator, Izquierdo is Professor of Classical Guitar at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where he has built one of the most respected guitar programs in the country. His students regularly win national and international awards and go on to successful performing and teaching careers.
René Izquierdo’s recordings span solo works, collaborations, and premieres of new music. He is a passionate advocate for Latin American and Cuban composers, and his interpretations are noted for their warmth, emotional depth, and elegance.
