FreePublic Art - Nest Making - Vicki Luke ticket
I have been making environmental artwork for decades following climate change, the human impact on threatened species and the myths of Eden and Paradise. Early explorations into 3D works took the form of bottomless nests. The illusion of safety surounding you with no guarantees. My first nests were eucalyptus boughs woven together making forms about 2 metres across which I burnt making rings of ash. I was dissuaded by a curator from burning my creations and became content to make them and let nature take its course. Over the years I have made many large nests from a variety of materials. The largest was 6 metres by 3 metres after a Stone Oak on our property was attacked by lightning. I have constructed nests in the gallery and natural environment with the most recent during Covid where I reconstructed a nest of 100 year old Fig branches into a white form at Wagga for their ‘Places We Love’ connecting spaces in the city. The making of these nests is very therapeutic. Choosing boughs that find their place in the form and weaving them in. They are surprisingly hesitant to be pulled apart. The birds are deeply suspicious of them. It is very interesting to see them surveying the form and wondering what type of bird made it! FreeGlider Workshop - Julian from Innovation Studio ticket
Led by the amazing CNRL Innovation Studio. Families play and learn with balsa wood gliders, adjusting the designs and trying prototypes. The workshop allows them to be engineers; designing gliders, aiming to improve the flight distance and time in the air. First, they determine the controls—the average distance traveled and time aloft for their basic model balsa wood gliders. Then they modify the wings, testing and reworking their altered designs to achieve improvements in distance and time. Using a design procedure whereby one variable is changed and all the others are kept constant, they determine how each modification affects the flight. Its also lots of fun!
