Join ANATS NSW and discover the power of conscious breathing and how it connects to the wholeness of the human experience. "The Perceptible Breath: The Middendorf Breathing Technique " is an interactive, practical workshop and masterclass specifically designed for Singers and Singing Teachers of all styles. The workshop focuses on somatic breathwork and it's applications in the treatment of performance and stage fright. This will be followed by a masterclass where Tanya will apply the technique directly with singers. The day will be led by Professor Tanya Aspelmeier: Soprano, Respiratory Therapist and Professor at University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Middendorf Breathwork is based on Prof. Ilse Middendorf's therapeutic and experiential breathing method also known as "BreathExperience", the primary focus of this breathwork is to discover the body’s own natural response and sensation to the breath as it comes and goes.
The key difference between Middendorf’s breathwork and most other somatic breathing practices is in allowing breath to flow through the body without imposition. Middendorf Breathwork trains a person’s skills of perception to understand and navigate their nervous system and regulate their own mental ability.

Workshop participants will be guided to increase conscious contact with the individual rhythm of their breath and its relationship to the voice for singing and speaking. The power of the breath and the flexibility of the whole body will be explored and expanded so that the free flow of breath is made accessible across a range of vocal skills and participants can experience an enhanced creative use of their instrument. The workshop is interactive and informal allowing room for questions and discussion about breath-related singing pedagogy.

TANYA ASPELMEIER

Soprano Tanya Aspelmeier graduated with distinction from the Hamburg University of Music. Over her extensive career she has won several prizes in renowned singing competitions, such as the National Singing Competition in Berlin, and performed numerous opera roles in Europe and internationally. Her repertoire ranges from baroque opera to Mozart, operetta to contemporary music theater and includes extensive oratorio roles and recital programs.

She has taught at the Bremen University of the Arts, the Hamburg Conservatory and the Hamburg University of Music and Theater and was appointed professor of singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 2018.

As a trained respiratory therapist, Tanya Aspelmeier gives international master classes in singing and breath-body-voice work; often in collaboration with Margreet Honig and other professors from international universities (Basel, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels). She is a Board Member of the EVTA (European Voice Teacher Association) Austria.
