Renters' Rights Rundown: Young people and renting
Event description
Young people are finding it increasingly difficult to secure and sustain safe and affordable rental housing, and to assert their rights.
In partnership with the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria and YouthLaw, VCOSS is running a free online Renters' Rights Rundown event on Young People and Renting.
This Renters' Rights Rundown session will take place online on the 12th of August from 9:45am - 11am and will feature:
Lauren Frost, Advocacy Manager at the Youth Affairs Council Victoria
Stephanie Pashias, Senior Lawyer, YouthLaw
This session is free and open to all, but particularly designed for community sector workers who:
Support people who are renting.
Provide information, advice, and assistance to young people.
The session will cover:
An overview of the current rental market for young Victorians and the specific barriers young people are facing.
Key rights that renters have under the Residential Tenancies Act and the unique challenges or experiences young people may face in asserting these rights.
Ways that community sector workers can help young people to assert their rights and access legal and non-legal assistance.
We will also dedicate plenty of time for an audience Q&A following presentations, so that the sector has plenty of opportunity to have any questions answered by our expert panel.
This event is delivered through VCOSS’ Delivering Rental Fairness project, which is funded through the Victorian Property Fund established and administered by the Victorian Government. VCOSS particularly acknowledges Consumer Affairs Victoria’s support for this work.
VCOSS is the peak representative body for Victoria’s social and community sector, and the state’s leading social advocacy organisation.
We work towards creating a Victoria that is fair, just and inclusive. A society where nobody is trapped by poverty, and everybody is supported to live a life of wellbeing.
