Renters' Rights Rundown
Event description
How's it going? Reflecting on Victoria's refreshed rental rules, three years on.
Victoria’s Residential Tenancies Act was amended in March 2021 to make renting fairer and safer. However, elements of this rights regime are still confusing and difficult to navigate for some people.
Unforeseen demand and soaring rent increases—amidst a wider cost of living crisis—have also heaped pressure on renters (and property investor landlords), testing the effectiveness of the rules. Conversation is now focussing on what future reforms could include to further increase rights and protections for renters.
To mark the anniversary of the 2021 RTA reforms, VCOSS is again partnering with Tenants Victoria for a free online session to dissect and explain Victoria's rental rules, and related matters. Participants will be given a formal briefing and invited to ask question about:
- How Victoria's rental laws operate.
- Renters' rights, obligations and protections.
- How to help renters challenge an eviction, rent increase or maintenance dispute.
- Strategies for managing matters escalated to VCAT.
This session is for anybody who supports people navigating rental issues, including all Victorian community sector workers.
VCOSS is the peak representative body for Victoria’s social and community sector, and the state’s leading social advocacy organisation. We work towards creating a Victoria that is fair, just and inclusive. A society where nobody is trapped by poverty, and everybody is supported to live a life of wellbeing.
