Event description

What’s it like Renting in Port Phillip
& What can be done?

Half the residents of Port Phillip* rent their homes, and it is not easy to get or keep one.
It's a 'Rental Crisis', but there are solutions.

All are welcome to a Public Meeting:
6.45–9pm,
Tuesday 21 November,
Betty Day Centre,

67 Argyle St, St Kilda.

Hear from renters about evictions, rent increases, poor conditions and finding a place to rent - and what’s needed to change that.

Inner Melbourne rents had recorded an annual increase of 32.3% by the end of the March Quarter 2023. 'Housing stress' is when you pay more than 30% of your gross income on rent - for many it is much more.

The median rental price for a 2 bedroom flat in Port Melbourne had reached $625pw, and the median rental price for a 3 bedroom house in Albert Park had reached $1000pw by end of the March Quarter 2023.

The ‘trend vacancy rate’ for Metro Melbourne in March 2023 was 1.9% compared with 4.4% in March 2022. Housing is becoming harder to secure every year.

Come along, tell your story, and hear about what can be done.

  • Hear from Dr Kate Shaw, activist & academic in urban geography at Melbourne University, about initiatives to address the crisis.
  • Learn the facts and causes of rental housing stress as well as innovative solutions.
  • Find out what agencies and groups are doing to help renters.
  • What should our local Council be doing?
  • Discuss ways forward and help form a new group to represent the renters of Port Phillip.

This event is free and all are welcome.

RSVP here to stay informed of any updates to the event. But come along anyway even if you don't register.
