Event description

Join us for an introductory workshop exploring how communities can reclaim and preserve their stories through research and archiving. Facilitated by Dr. Andrea Edwards, environmental justice advocate and skilled researcher. This session supports and expands on the Preserving Our Past installation, part of Africa Month 2025.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Receive a guided tour of the Central City Library's Research Library by specialist librarians
  • Learn the basics of archival research and documentation
  • Discover how to access public archives and heritage collections
  • Explore strategies for preserving family or community histories
  • Understand the value of everyday stories in shaping collective memory
  • Be invited to reflect on and potentially share their own experiences

This workshop is open to people of all backgrounds and experience levels, no prior research knowledge is needed. Whether you’re a curious beginner or passionate about preserving your roots, you’ll be equipped with tools to protect and elevate your personal, familial, or community narratives in Aotearoa.

Research + Archiving 101 is part of Africa Month, an arts and culture programme that celebrates the diverse African diaspora communities in Aotearoa. To stay up to date with the Africa Month programme for 2025, follow Vocal Roots on all social media platforms.

This workshop is proudly supported by the City Centre Targeted Rate.
