    Event description

SBS and the University of Canberra invite you to a live webinar to celebrate the launch of an important new study examining how representation in news media shapes multilingual audiences’ sense of belonging to, and participation in, Australian society.

The study, ‘Sense of Belonging among multilingual audiences in Australia’, presents the first research in Australia conducted in multiple languages that aims to understand the drivers of belonging in multilingual communities and explores how the news media contributes to strengthening ties in Australian society.

Focused on five multilingual communities – Arabic, Cantonese, Italian, Mandarin and Vietnamese – the research hopes to spark discussion about what can be done to foster a greater sense of belonging among multilingual communities and accelerate it for the newest migrants to Australia, helping service providers, news organisations and governments make informed decisions to better serve those communities.

Join host and SBS presenter Virginia Langeberg for this special one hour and 15 minute session. Key findings will be presented for the first time by research leads from SBS and the University of Canberra, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session open to the audience via Slido.

A link to the full research paper will be made available on the day.

We look forward to seeing you online!
