'Responding to the Pandemic and Measuring What Matters'

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought an unprecedented focus on the decisions we make and the evidence behind them. In the 2020 Keith Hancock Lecture, the President of the Fair Work Commission, Justice Iain Ross AO, talks about the impact of COVID-19 on workplaces and their employees, the Commission’s response to the pandemic, and the importance of an evidence-based approach to decision-making. As Australia grapples with the health and economic challenges of the pandemic, Justice Ross argues measuring what matters has never been more critical.
Hon Justice Iain Ross AO, President of the Fair Work Commission
On 1 March 2012, Iain was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court and President of the Fair Work Commission. Prior to his appointment, Iain was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria and President of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Iain has also served as Chair of the Council of Australasian Tribunals, inaugural Chair of the Mediator Standards Board, a Judge of the County Court of Victoria, partner of a major law firm and a Vice President of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia on 13 June 2005 and elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia on 25 September 2019.
The Keith Hancock Lecture is named in honour of Emeritus Professor Keith Hancock AO – a Fellow of the Academy since 1968, Academy President for the period 1981–1984 and one of two Australians who are Honorary Fellows of the London School of Economics. The annual lecture was inaugurated in 2009. The Academy Fellows are invited each year to nominate distinguished social scientist to present the Keith Hancock Lecture.
This lecture is jointly hosted by the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and the Fair Work Commission.
This lecture will be delivered over Zoom as an online event. Registration is essential. The lecture will be recorded and the video will be emailed to all registrants following the event.
