About the event:

These two short workshops will encourage participants to understand more about the situations in which people with ‘challenging behaviour’ find themselves and to explore how they can best respond to support the person.

Presenter Ann Greer will cover ways to develop strategies with the person, so that, regardless of the level of their disability, they can better understand the motivations, effects and consequences of their behaviour.

These workshops will involve information sharing, practical tips and strategies and learning through stories. It will not provide a recipe to ‘fix’ the person.

These two workshops will cover different aspects of how to best respond. We recommend attending both if that's possible. If not, you are welcome to attend either session. You will need to register for the workshop/s.

Workshop 1: Understanding the Basics - Wednesday 18th June | arrive 5pm for a 5.30pm start, finishing at 8pm (includes light refreshments)

Grounded in the developmental model, Ann teaches us to understand behaviour as a form of communication. Learn techniques for responding, without the need for consequences and punishments.

Workshop 2: More Strategies for Responding Well - Thursday 19th June | arrive 8.30am for a 9am start, finishing at 1pm (includes morning tea)

Ann encourages neutral language, paying attention to non-verbal behaviour and avoiding making assumptions. Ann explores de-escalating and co-regulating behaviour. Learn about the importance of responding to the underlying causes. Behaviours can easily be misunderstood & underlying causes missed.

This is a collaboration with the MDSS Neighbourhood Centre.

About the Presenter:

Ann Greer has over 30 years’ professional experience working with people whose behaviours are seen as challenging. As well as drawing on the teachings of Donnellan, LaVigna and Willis, most of her learning and understandings have come from her greatest teachers, people with disabilities themselves.

Ann works with people with disability and their families across Australia to develop creative options and understand what’s possible in making a good life. Ann is the mother of three adults, two of whom live with disability.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop will be of interest to anyone supporting a person labelled as challenging, particularly family members. Other supporters, including paid workers are welcome as well, so that everyone can learn together as a team.

Learning Objectives

Participants in this workshop will:

Understand forms of communication and interpret its role in behaviour;
Learn how to work collaboratively to understand the motives, effects and consequences of behaviour;
Understand their part in the behaviour of others;
Learn how to respond to behaviour in ways that are respectful and non-punishing;
Develop strategies for working with people to better understand and respond to their communication and ‘behaviours’.
