October is Sexual Violence Awareness Month
Children by Choice, Cairns Sexual Health and Cairns Sexual Assault services have teamed up to facilitate an immersive, full day training workshop for health and allied health care practitioners who provide clinical services, counselling or support to people who may want to consider pregnancy options, have experienced sexual violence or require post-abortion support.
If you have previously attended our training, this is an opportunity to update practice and extend your professional networks.

Morning session 0845 arrival for 0900 - 1230
Termination of Pregnancy – Options & Pathways in Cairns and Hinterland HHS and responding to first disclosure of sexual violence
- Re-orientation to Children by Choice service, service mapping, doula and current projects
- Enhanced knowledge pregnancy options and appropriate referral pathways in Cairns & Hinterland HHS
- Cultural safety in the context of unplanned and unwanted pregnancy- increasing confidence in discussing taboo topics
- Progressing counselling skills to support women and pregnant people considering their pregnancy options or seeking abortion care
- Non-directive options counselling recap: Thinking about our values and beliefs - being a clinical champion · Socio-legal context of pregnancy and abortion · Non-directive all options counselling core practice principles
- Supporting autonomy: recognise the intersection of unplanned pregnancy, domestic violence and reproductive coercion
- Identifying and responding to disclosure of sexual violence & applied practice
- Self-care: for workers supporting survivors of sexual violence

The afternoon workshop will feature:
- Local health care providers panel discussion ‘What is a compassionate abortion?’: Identifying practice and integration of MTOP in General Practice and clinics and referral pathways through Cairns & Hinterland HHS - multidisciplinary representatives from Cairns Doctors, Cairns Hospital and Sexual Health Service and TRUE
- Introduction to Post-abortion counselling and support
- Post-abortion counselling in the context of unplanned or unwanted pregnancy
- The pregnancy and abortion story
- Anticipatory Stress, Stress and Trauma
- A trauma informed approach to abortion care
- Responding to common themes and issues: case study and discussion
- Post-abortion counselling referral
- Discussion, reflection & self-care
