Justice Beyond Jails Learning Session: Rethinking our responses to gender-based violence

SRHM is pleased to share this learning session hosted by the Just Futures Collaborative:

The Just Futures Collaborative is hosting this session for colleagues and friends engaged in preventing and responding to gender-based violence, and especially those engaging in this work from a public health perspective.

The session will introduce the Justice beyond Jails interactive storytelling tool and use two of the stories for their facilitated discussions. It is organized to be a co-learning space to critically examine the limits of criminal law as a response to GBV.

We'll help surface non-carceral strategies that can shift the broader pattern of GBV, as well as how to respond more effectively to people who have been harmed. We hope to draw on our shared knowledge to weave together responses that are centered on healing, accountability, and safety.

Carceral responses to GBV have a complicated record. Legal reforms have given some survivors tools and recognition they didn't have before, and arrest or protective orders can offer short-term safety in acute situations. But most people who have been harmed never seek help or support, and funding for social, legal and health services is vastly inadequate.


When survivors do engage the criminal legal system, GBV rarely reaches prosecution, and indeed, criminalization can deter reporting in over-policed communities.  And evidence on whether arrest or incarceration actually reduces repeat violence is mixed at best.


Critically, carceral responses don't address the social and economic conditions that drive GBV in the first place — which is why so many are turning to alternatives that center healing, accountability, and prevention.
