REVENGE / Месть
(1989) dir. Yermek Shinarbayev
100 mins, Unclassified 15+
Russian with English subtitles
A boy is raised with one purpose - to avenge the death of his murdered sister. A collaboration between Korean-Russian writer Anatoli Kim and Kazakh director / Soviet-film-school graduate Yermek Shinarbayev, this crown jewel of the Kazakh New Wave is the first film to depict the Korean diaspora in Central Asia. A dreamlike, luminous epic with one of the better classical scores you've ever heard -- made to be experienced on the big screen with big speakers. Do Not Miss.
Restored in 2010 by World Cinema Foundation at Cineteca di Bologna/L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in association with Kazakhfilm Studio, the State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Ermek Shinarbaev. Restoration funding provided by Armani, Cartier, Qatar Airways and Qatar Museum Authority.
