Event description

Observations towards the trace of the cinematic image, shifting from abstraction to form, from abstracted footage to narrative form - a selection of experimental shorts.

Please note this session includes strobing imagery.

Norm

Max Hattler                                       Germany, Hong Kong/2025/16 min

Various lens and monitor test charts were animated across seven chapters to create visual hallucinations and graphical sound. All sound is generated by directly reading the film's image as an optical soundtrack.

Hauntation

Jacob Tenzin Canet-Gibson         Australia/2025/5 min

Explores the haunting legacy of Brownlie Towers through layered photographic processes, blending digital and analogue techniques to evoke a lost future and question how technology mediates memory, perception, and the materiality of place.

Chimeras

Darren Kyle Tynan                               Australia/2025/7 min

An experiment in diffusion-based animation: a generative Latour litany of seemingly disparate ideas and visual and sonic data that connect together through processes of outpainting and sound collage.

Monument

Jeremy Drummond                             USA, Canada/2025/17 min

Pairs hand-processed and chemically-altered Super 8 footage of the decaying monuments of Presidents Park (Croaker, VA).

Do Plagues Happen Like Songs in A Revolution

Caloy Limjap Soliongco                       Philippines/2025/6 min

An incomplete short film cut into the sum of its parts echoes the question we are all still asking to this day, plagues be damned - when will this end, if it ever will?

The Shape of Things to Come

Tommy Becker                                    USA/2025/22 min

A six-chapter art rock film that delves into themes of nostalgia for the future, uncertainties of technological progress, and the quest for authentic human connection.
