Join Her Place in support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence for an evening of impactful conversations on gendered violence and advocacy.

Guest speakers include:

  • Hana Assafiri, author of The Audacity to be Free. Hana Assafiri is a feminist activist and entrepreneur, whose established the Moroccan Soup Bar which became as synonymous for its activism, support for migrant and refugee women fleeing violence, as it did for its outstanding cuisine. A recipient of the Order of Australia, a TimeOut legend Award Winner and Inductee into the Victorian Honour Roll, Hana is also a survivor of gendered violence, sharing her personal story in the recently published The Audacity of Hope.
  • Professor Kyllie Cripps is a Palawa woman and Director of Monash’s Indigenous Studies Centre. She is one of Australia’s leading researchers on Indigenous family violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Having worked extensively with Indigenous communities for over 20 years, she has contributed to the field through empirical studies.These studies have defined violence on Indigenous terms, identified the factors contributing to violence, and examined the access and availability of services to Indigenous peoples in the aftermath of violence.
  • Dr. Jacqui Theobold, co-author of From the Margins to the Mainstream: The Domestic Violence Services Movement in Victoria, Australia 1974-2016.Dr Jacqui Theobold is a Senior Lecturer in the Social Work & Social Police at the Rural Health School LaTrobe University. Her research focuses on domestic violence services, particularly the differing experiences of rural and urban women. She is the co-author of From the Margins to the Mainstream, a history of domestic violence services in Victoria and has researched and recorded the history of Jessie Mary (Bon) Hull, a feminist activist and comrade of Zelda D'Aprano, who was instrumental in establishing the Women's Liberation Centre and Abortion Trust Fund.
