Rice Clay Sculpture with Vivian

In this unique workshop, you’ll learn how to create a brand new sustainable and organic material from scratch — Rice clay. This material has been innovated by Vivian as part of her research and development of rice materials. This includes the creation of rice fabric - check out her Sentimental Rice Jewellery project! 

Rice clay is a mixture of cooked rice and embroidery floss. After dehydrating it under the sun naturally, the rice clay becomes stiff and hard. If you hold it against the light, you can see the magical texture of rice clay due to translucency.

It may be an unconventional material, and a sticky process, but it's also so meditative to get so hands-on.

Rice clay can be made into lots of beautiful objects - from bowls, to sculpture pieces and even jewellery.

What we will cover?

In this workshop you will learn:

• How to mix cooked rice with different fibres, especially embroidery floss to create this unique material
• Dehydration process
• Moulding technique to transform it into beautiful pieces of useable art
• Please bring a plastic container to take your rice clay work home safely

Who will be teaching?

Vivian Qiu (she/her) is a sentimental jewellery designer. She holds a Bachelor (Honours) degree in Fashion Design in RMIT. Her jewellery practice focuses on reflective designing based on emotions, stories, and memories. 

She explores a variety of non-traditional materials in her practice, including rice fabric created by herself, recycled electrical wires, treated fabric and so on.

She has been running creative hands-on workshops since 2015. She has worked with Signal, City of Melbourne, Geelong Wool Museum, and Immigration Museum.  You can follow her on Instagram.
